Diosdado Velasquez started Nature's Kindle in 2012 originally as a side hustle to pay his way through college. He was in the healthcare industry with crazy clinical hours (often overnight shifts with no pay as an intern) so a regular "job" was impossible.
Pondering what he could buy and sell as a side business, he quickly landed on the candles. After testing out the industry by buying and selling various candle brands to start out, he discovered the benefits of soy candles, and soon sought out to make them himself.
Dios decided to blend his love for nature and the outdoors with this new candle venture. Armed with a candle making class under his belt, paired with broke-college-student-ambition, Nature's Kindle was born.
The first show was a disaster. True story. It was Valentine's Day and it was pouring rain in Costa Mesa, CA. Despite the "L" (for loss, not love) we decided to continue to press forward and tighten up on our branding and our fragrances. We narrowed everything down to the basics, and asked ourselves what we really wanted to stand for. Who did we want to be?
Dios and I (Emily) signed a lease on our first Nature's Kindle warehouse space in 2015 as newlyweds. We had 1 sales rep. He was working in healthcare doing overnight shifts and making candles during the day.
The space doubled the next year, and Dios decided to take Nature's Kindle on full time. Again, we asked ourselves, who do we want to be? The plans set forth to move up north. We packed up shop in May 2018 and headed for Portland, Oregon.
Oregon has quickly become home for us. We are inspired by the natural and rugged beauty that it offers as well as the collaborative environment of the creative community here. Although we love Southern California, we are excited about the next chapter and what will bloom here for us and Nature's Kindle.
Thank you for reading and being apart of our journey!
